The Magic of Argan Oil

Argan Oil and Haircare

When someone mentions Argan Oil to me, I immediately think of my hair and I have a smile on my face. I personally believe Argan oil in haircare is the best thing since conditioner, and I'm a huge fan of conditioner (who doesn't love soft and silky hair right?).

Argan oil is a plant oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree and is indigenous to Morocco. It is valued for its nutritive, cosmetic and numerous medicinal properties.

Argan Oil is one of the world's most expensive oils, but with all the amazing goodness it holds (more than most oils) its worth the extra money. Rich in nutrients; fatty acids; vitamins and carotenoids, Argan oil can be used in your skin care routine and in your hair care routine.

I've read a few articles about how Argan oil is helpful with acne! Do any of you suffer from acne and have tried Argan oil? I love that Argan oil has so many properties but as I mentioned before, Argan oil for your hair is just my favourite.

Long time ago I posted about Glam and Green Natural Haircare so when I find an oil like Argan oil, Im over the moon. Argan oil is able to moisturise your hair and leave it feeling silky, shiny and soft; it protects against heat styling and it repairs your ends leaving you with stronger hair.

Amazing right?

Im busy using an oil at the moment that contains Argan oil as well as some other fantastic oils - so excited to post about it - keep an eye out ;)

Whats your take on Argan oil?

Better Life and Harmless House product launch

The Launch for Harmless House and Better Life Products

Last week I was invited to attend the Harmless House Media Event at the lovely Aroma Cafe in Fourways. Kate Townsend and Tracey Pictor from Harmless House introduced us to two new ranges (available on the Harmless House online store and in some selected stores) , the Better Life range and a range from Harmless House.

Both these ranges are about making your home greener

Better Life

Better Life was started in 2008 by two fathers who were concerned about their children's safety with the chemicals that are used in house hold products. The Better Life range is cruelty free, vegan and free from sulphates;ethoxylates; fragrances; SLS phosphates; ammonia; bleach; dyes and Volatile Organic Compounds such as alcohol. Although they are free from all of this, they still clean just as effectively as normal household cleaning products.

The Better Life range includes the following:

What- EVER: all purpose cleaner
Simply Floored: floor cleaner
Take it for Granite: High end stone surface cleaner
I can see clearly, WOW: window/glass cleaner
Einshine: Stainless Steel cleaner
Oak-Y-Dokey: wood polish
Even The Kitchen Sink: deep cleaning scrubber for all surfaces
Dish It Out: Dish washing liquid
Automatic Magic: automatic dishwasher liquid
Liquid Soaps
Hand Lotions

I'll be posting a review soon on the Oak-Y-Dokey cleaner

Don't you just love the names of the products?

At the event there were flowers on the tables in what seemed to be water, but in actual fact  they were in the Better Life cleaning solutions! Amazing right? Its all natural so why not?

Harmless House

Harmless House also launched their own range of house hold cleaners that leaves things spick and span but don't harm the environment as they are washed down the drain.

These products are free from sulphates; phosphates and harmful chemicals. They are water course and septic tank friendly; certified cruelty free; 100%biodegradable and gentle on your skin.

The Harmless House range includes the following products:
Laundry Gel
Surface Cleaner
Toilet Cleaner
Dishwashing Liquid
Dog Shampoo

Along with my Better Life Oak-Y-Dokey review, I will also be posting a review on the Harmless House Laundry Gel

All these products are available online at The Harmless House website , while browsing you might find some great body products as well ;) Here's the link to one of my favourite products from Harmless House which I use weekly.

Look out for those reviews which will be posted soon

Tips for a Glam and Green Salon

Eco-Tips for a Salon

Here are a few tips on how to turn your hair salon into a Glam and Green salon:

1) Produce oxygen - feature some pot plants around the salon, make it greener by using old containers or tins as the pots. Its attractive and balances out the carbon dioxide emissions

2) Use low energy lighting - low energy light bulbs last a lot longer and use up to 60% less energy

3) Recycle - place recycling bins in your salon for staff as well as customers to use

4) switch off bluetooth and wifi - when not in use, switch off the bluetooth and wifi feature on your phones and personal computers as its boosts your battery life, saving you having to charge your phone constantly which uses a lot of electricity

5) Save water - turn off the tap while massaging in your clients hair products, example treatments or whilst giving them a head massage

6) Use green cleaning products - switch to green cleaning products in the salon, better for you and your clients, better for the environment

7) Only use the washing machine when full - Only once the washing machine if full with the salons towels etc, let it run. Also try and run it as a cold wash, it saves electricity and is just as efficient.

8) Embrace the natural light - make sure your windows are always sparkly clean so you can embrace the natural light from the sun, this gives the salon a warmer feel, uses less electricity and allows you to accurately read your clients hair colour

9) Switch off unnecassary lights - switch off unnecessary lights in the salon, especially at night when there is no need for them to be on

10) Inspire your clients - share tips with your clients on how they can become greener at home and what you've done to be more eco friendly at the salon

A lot of these tips can also be incorporated in your home - simple Glam and Green changes that can make a difference

ZAMBIA - AUGUST 2012

ZAMBIA IN AUGUST - 2012

Since 2010 I've been fortunate enough to go to Zambia quite a few times *lucky girl*, and this trip was just as great as the others! The amount of wildlife I saw was unbelievable - so amazing! During this trip we even went further down the river (we also go to the lower Zambezi) and even spent the day in the National Park. I witnessed how the vegetation is completely different further down the river, so beautiful.

Here are a few photos from my trip - I hope you enjoy xXx

A few days before we arrived 2 hippos had fought over territory and one had died, on top of the bank is the hippo carcass which had been eaten by lions - the vultures were still circling when we came to look

Ah I love spotting crocs!

A beautiful Kingfisher that chilled near our boat, such stunning colours

A Baobab tree, one of my dad's favourites

Nothing like a sunset on the Zambezi River

I love this rock formation

Yes, another croc pic ;)

Is this not the most precious thing?
By the Chongwe River, one of my new fav spots

So amazing seeing the elephant and crocodile live peacefully together

I love being able to be so close to the wildlife

Shame this little guy was almost taken out by a croc

majestic

my favourite, favourite photo

Thanks for letting me share my wonderful time in Zambia with you - let me know your thoughts

Project summary - Trees for Zambia - Greenpop

Trees for Zambia project summary - from Greenpop

A while ago I post about Greenpop going to plant trees in Zambia (previous post link) in July 2012 - here is an update for you on the amazing work that they did

4135 trees were planted in total over 3 weeks (1st to 22 July 2012).
21 schools received trees and a fun-filled day of tree planting, education and seed propagation with the pupils
775 trees (various fruits and Faidherbia albida) were planted with a women’s group at Songwe village in one day at a protected vegetable gardening site that was set up by Sun International. 110 extra trees were given to the women to plant at their homes.
875 indigenous trees were planted in a reforestation effort in a concession area of Dambwa forest in partnership with Lion Encounter and ALERT. 150 extra trees will be planted at that reforestation site in the next weeks.
280 lemon trees, 27 mango trees and 509 Faidherbia albida trees were planted with a group of 8 subsistence farmers at a community organisation called Sons of Thunder and the amazing benefits of the Faidherbia albida tree in conservation farming were demonstrated. The Conservation Farming Unit sent their representative, Gibson Simosokwe, down from Lusaka in the first week to train the farmers and the volunteers on this technique which enriches the soil and facilitates higher crop yields by planting trees within fields. In the 2nd week, UNDP representative, Excellent Hachileka, joined us along with Sadrick Sapwe from the Department of Forestry to continue the education and help set up a micro nursery at Sons of Thunder so that the farmers can start growing their own trees. 40 extra lemon trees were given to the farmers for planting in the coming weeks.

150 indigenous trees were planted on the final day of Trees for Zambia at the beautiful Victoria Falls in partnership with the National Heritage Conservation Commission.
21 trees were planted at Maramba River Lodge were volunteers were warmly hosted - 1 tree for every day of the project.

Ah, I just LOVE this!!!
