Red Carpet Green Dress - Oscars 2013

Eco - Fashion at the 2013 Academy Awards

Last year, I blogged about the Red Carpet Green Dress campaign - read about it here - and how they were bringing sustainable fashion to the red carpet.

This year, Michael Badger, won the competition and created the gorgeous gown for the "Skyfall" actress, Naomie Harris.

Badger, born in Ghana, was mentored by the Legendary designer Dame Vivienne Westwood, through the creation of his design in her London-based studio.

The gown that Badger created was made from a certified organic silk crepe de chine. It was embroided with vintage glass beads from the 1920's to the 1960's as well as, wait for it, chocolate candy wrappers! Talk about re-using ;) The zippers that were used, were standard reclaimed zippers. "The dying process employed golden rod and a renewable biodegradable natural plant source, a humble camomile, which is also used medicinally and for camomile tea. Since there were no water pollutants or chemicals used, any waste produced was transferred to a compost heap." - source

Badger, "drew inspiration from one of nature’s most powerful forces, a volcano. By focusing on the appearance of lava as it flows, Badger’s design celebrates our world’s natural splendor and serves to remind each of us of our role as its caretaker" - source

Tommy Crawford, Creative Director for Greenpeace International’s Global Detox Campaign said that “The gown created for this year’s Red Carpet Green Dress contest proves that even the most intricate design, subject to the highest levels of scrutiny, can be as sustainable as it is beautiful”.

What are your thoughts on the dress? I love it! I think part of the reason I love it so much is because I know it is eco-friendly  - very Glam and Green ;

Miss Earth: Stationery Drive 2013

Stationery Drive 2013 - Miss Earth SA

This year, one of my goals as I stated in my Happy New Year post was "Random acts of kindness: I want to give back to others more. Even if I can only give them a smile, sometimes that's all that a person needs to have a better day" as well as "To be the best I can be: to be great at work; a great friend; a great daughter; a great sister; a great person ~ each of us have it in us to be the very best", so giving back to others is definitely what I aim for this year. I decided that a great way to start would be to get involved with the Miss Earth's Stationery Drive campaign.

I got in touch with the Miss Earth office and this is what they had to say:

"Miss Earth SA Stationery Drive set to give hope and inspire

It’s not just green issues, greening communities and inspiring sustainable lifestyles. Miss Earth South Africa in association with Consol have launched their annual Stationery Drive campaign; a project born from seeing thousands of children going to school without so much as a pencil. In 2012, in honour of the Miss Earth South Africa’s 10 year anniversary, the organisation set itself the audacious goal of distributing 10,000 stationery packs to underprivileged learners across South Africa. A task they were more than equal to, having distributed in excess of 11,700 stationery packs by the end of March last year.

This year the organisation aims to maintain or exceed this number, having already received requests for more than 7 000 stationery packs from very poor and disadvantaged schools and organisations before the end of last year. A number of schools in the Gauteng region have already been identified as the first schools that will benefit from the campaign, which is now in its 7th year. Some of the areas that will benefit include Orange Farm, Alexandra, Vosloorus and Thembisa to name but a few.

“We understand the need for and value of education and we have visited primary schools in under underprivileged areas where up to 40 learners share one pencil in a classroom, this is not conducive to a healthy learning environment. The contributions of the public are what makes it possible for us to equip these learners with the stationery they need to make the most of their education,” said Miss Earth South Africa National Director, Catherine Constantinides.

Ella Bella, the Miss Earth South Africa’s Educational Officer, said that many of the children were so overwhelmed with joy and pride to have their own their own set of stationery that, during distributions last year, many children asked if they had to give it back.

Contributions to the Stationery Drive can be made either in physical stationery or in the form of financial contributions to the Miss Earth South Africa organisation. It is asked that no old or broken stationery be sent. Stationery sets are the easiest and most logistically uncomplicated to distribute. In 2012 the greatest contribution and difference was made by the selfless contributions of hundreds of South African’s who participated by collecting from those around them and going out to buy packs of stationery, books, diaries and files. For more information about how you can get involved, please visit the Miss Earth South Africa’s website: www.missearthsa.co.za and tweet @missearth_sa or email the office at info@missearthsa.co.za. For further queries call the Head Office in Johannesburg on 011 680 6650."

For those that are interested in helping out, above are the details for the Miss Earth office.

To my friends and readers in the Gauteng area, I'm going to be collecting stationery to hand over to Miss Earth and would love if you could help! Please remember, every small amount helps, even if it is just a pen or a sharpener - you are helping someone's future to be brighter!

REVIEW: Zoya

Zoya 18k Gold Flakes Top Coat Review

As some of you may know, I'm a huge fan of Zoya - read my review on the brand here - so imagine my delight when I got to test the amazing 18k Gold, yes I said gold, top coat!

I decided to have it painted over the black shade called "Raven" and have my signature nail painted in "Pippa" and then they were topped with the queen of all nail polishes, the 18k Gold Top Coat!

I was so impressed with these nail polishes as they lasted for 9 days! can you believe it! I only removed my nail polish because one nail had a slight chip and my nails had begun to grow out.

Another plus was that I received so many compliments on my nails!

I highly recommend Zoya nail polish as its 5-free and lasts so long!

Look out for some more Zoya reviews soon, and who knows, maybe another Zoya giveaway ;)

Why Should We Recycle?

The Importance of Recycling and Why We Should Do It!

Here are just a few reasons why we should all recycle:

Saves Natural Resources - By making products from recycled materials, we conserve land and reduce the need to drill for oil and dig for minerals.

Saves Energy - It usually takes less energy to make recycled products

Saves Clean Air and Water - In most cases, making products from recycled materials creates less air pollution and water pollution than making products from virgin materials.

Saves Landfill Space - When the materials that you recycle go into new products, they don't go into landfills or incinerators, so landfill space is conserved.

Saves Money and Creates Jobs - The recycling process creates far more jobs than landfills or incinerators, and recycling can frequently be the least expensive waste management method for cities and towns.

Imagine we all played our part and recycled? How great would that be!
How about making it your goal for the year to start recycling? If if its just one thing, example: paper - it would make a big difference!

Do you recycle? let me know :)

REVIEW: Zoya Nail Polish

Zoya, Natural Nail Polish
Zoya, a natural nail polish brand that I have just fallen in love with! Created by a loving husband who wanted to protect his pregnant wife from the toxins in nail polishes, Zoya was created in 1986.

I love nail polishes! But, many of them contain toxins that can seep into your nail bed and into your system, the thought always scares me! So imagine my delight when I found a nail brand that was not only 3-Free (as in Formaldehyde, Toulene and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) free) but was 5-Free, so it also excludes Formaldehyde Resin and Camphor! Zoya was actually the first nail brand that was 3-Free!

I had first noticed Zoya after one of my Glam and Green icons, Indie Lee, had tweeted a bit about them - I knew I had to get my hands on some of their polishes!

I was delighted to meet up with Ruvi, one of the reps for Zoya last year and imagine my surprise when I saw ALL the different colours

I got to try some of their summer collection "Beach and Surf" which I featured in my Glam and Green Gift Guide - I couldn't decide what colour I liked so I tried them all ;)

Zoya really has every colour you could think of and is such a fantastic brand! I managed to try out a few colours and bought some gorgeous ones so have a look out for when I post those reviews, I also tried the 18k Gold Top Coat!

To spread the Zoya love - Im giving away a stunning colour called 'Morgan' to a lucky reader!

GOOD LUCK!
