Lovely Lavender

The wonders of Lavender..

When you think of lavender, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? The colour purple, relaxation, calmness..
Well lavender is exactly this, and more

From health to beauty to decor, lavender has many uses. In ancient times the Romans added lavender to their bath water - the name lavender came from the Latin word, lavare, to wash. This is still practiced today as a way of relaxation.

Tessa Biagio from Essentially Tessa has some wonderful and interesting uses of lavender that she is sharing with us today:

Health

  • Lavender oil is often associated with burns; you can apply the oil on a burn blister. If you do not have the oil on hand, apply bruised fresh flowers, cover the burn area with the flowers and close the burn with gauze. Let the skin breathe every now and then though. I never knew that lavender could be used on burns, what an interesting fact Tessa!

  • It is highly effective for relieving itching insect bites

  • lavender heals small cuts for example: paper cuts and scratches

  • lavender also normalizes blood sugar output by the liver. One or two drops massaged on the tummy area before a meal will noticeably reduce the appetite.

Since I know Im not the only one who loves lavender, I asked my friends in the #green twitter community to let me know about what they think of lavender...
Here's what they had to say:
Lucy Stevens, Founder of OV naturals Aromatherapeutic skincare had this to share with us:

"The aroma of the Lavender varies depending on where it is grown & how it is produced. Traditionally, French Lavender is the most sought-after. True Lavender has a sweet scent with a slight woodiness and can be quite pungent. The Organic Naturally Farmed, High Altitude French Lavender is a lighter, more uplifting oil, which still retains the floral scent but is less heady, in fact, it gives the impression of standing on top of a mountain! High Altitude Lavender generally produces more esters: relaxing natural chemicals.

You can use Lavender essential oil for stress, anxiety, digestive disorders, muscular aches and pains and respiratory issues as well as for skincare. For skincare it can be effective to help treat acne, allergies, bruises, burns, dermatitis, eczema, inflammation, psoriasis, spots, sunburn and wounds.

There are many ways to use Lavender essential oil at home, too, for first aid or relaxation.  Lavender is a mild sedative, so as with all essential oils, use it in moderation. It is always best to consult a professional before using essential oils at home. Always read the Directions and precautions before using essential oils."
