Friday inspiration on being Glam and Green

Friday inspiration on being Glam and Green

"If all mankind were to disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of equilibrium that existed ten thousand years ago. If insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos." - Edward O. Wilson

This weekend, take some time out to think about what you can do for the environment... recycle? buy earth-friendly products? start a compost heap in your garden? take your own shopping bags?  ...
If everyone did just one small 'green' thing, imagine what a difference it could do?

Have a Glam & Green weekend everyone

Water, precious water

WATER, PRECIOUS WATER

“Water is life's mater and matrix, mother and medium. There is no life without water.” Albert Szent-Gyorgyi quotes (Hungarian Biochemist, 1937 Nobel Prize for Medicine, 1893-1986)

I remember sitting in a cultural history lecture in varsity and my professor said something that has stuck with me since. She said that when there is a world war again, it will not be over land, it will be over the precious resource that is know as water..

I have put together a few tips and some interesting information for you so you can become more aware of your usage of water

“Water has no taste, no color, no odor; it cannot be defined, art relished while ever mysterious. Not necessary to life, but rather life itself. It fills us with a gratification that exceeds the delight of the senses.” ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPERY (1900-1944), Wind, Sand, and Stars, 1939

Water

The average global rainfall is 870mm per year, South Africa receives about 450mm per year. This makes South Africa the 30th driest country in the water ie: we need to SAVE WATER

Ways to save water:
  • When washing your dishes, save water by using one sink for washing and the other sink for rinsing
  • make sure your sprinklers water only your garden, not your walls, the road etc
  • make sure the washing machine is full
  • love drinking your 2l of water everyday? - use a jug to fill up your glass, not the tap. This way, every drop counts. Also, just using the same glass through the day, saves water by not washing a clean one every single time
  • A bath uses about 120 litres of water, while a shower uses 80 litres of water. Shorten your shower by 2 minutes and you will save about 500 litres per month
  • Collect water from your roof for your garden
  • Don't let the water run while you brush your teeth (one of my pet peeves gosh)

  • Dispose of your tissues in the trash, not down the loo
  • wash dark colours in cold water, saves water as well as the colour
  • Really lathering up your shampoo? Applying a treatment for your hair? switch off the water while doing this
  • When getting fresh water for your pets, throw that water into the garden instead of down the drain and then give them fresh water
  • Keep a bucket in the shower. When your shower is warming up or even when it runs, collect this water and use it for your toilet or your garden

Save The Rhino

SAVE THE RHINO

2012 has started on a sad note for the Rhinos of South Africa. January has just begun and already a total of 11 rhino carcasses have been found.

"Despite increased law enforcement efforts, rhino poaching accelerated in South Africa last year. The country lost 448 rhinos to poaching in 2011, official government statistics reveal. The total includes 19 critically endangered black rhinos, of which fewer than 5,000 remain in the wild. In 2010, 333 South African rhinos were killed by poachers, nearly three times the number killed in 2009." WWF . For more information from WWF South AFrica, click here

One of the reasons for this unthinkable act of cruelty, is the increasing demand for rhino horns in Asia. This is becasue of the misconception that rhino horns, a luxury item, can be used as a cure for cancer and other illnesses ??? NOT TRUE

This NEEDS to STOP!

Lend your voice to this cause, sign the Wilderness Foundation Petition

Dont you want your children and grandchildren to be able to see a rhino in real life rather then hear tales about it?

TOGETHER, WE CAN HELP STOP RHINO POACHING

Being a Glam and Green Girl who looooooves cars, I found this very interesting!

The Ocean..

The Magical Sea..

I've always found the ocean to be truly fascinating...I would've loved to have been a marine biologist, no actually, a mermaid <3

Whenever I walk along the shore of Cape Town's beaches my mind always finds itself going over this quote, so I wanted to share it with you..

" For whatever we lose (like a you or a me), it is always ourselves we find in the sea" EE Cummings

Admire the sea's beauty the next chance you have, find yourself..
