Interviewing Tasha from Miöja

The Glam Green Girl and Mioja interview:
A few weeks ago I went on the Miöja website and instantly fell in love! The eye-catching colours and the wonderful beliefs really draw you in - as soon as I went on, I knew I needed to know more about Miöja.

Next week I will post a review on the Miöja products but first I wanted to know more about the founder Tasha, and her company. Here is some information about Tasha:

Tasha Saha is the founder of Miöja: natural, organic skincare formulated with vibrational remedies to bring you back to your innate balance. Tasha is a Yoga Instructor, teaching from her studio, Maitri Yoga in the KZN Midlands, and at retreats and workshops nationwide. Committed to holistic health, Tasha has treated herself and her family with herbal and home remedies for over 15 years and is still learning

Tasha is so full of knowledge, I hope you enjoy reading more about Miöja and what it entails:

1.    Tasha, what inspired you to create Mioja?

I was inspired first by the natural goodness of the plants in my garden. Such precious, powerful things! Coming from London, I never had a garden of my own until I came to South Africa, and when I did, there was such a lot of learning and exploring to be done.

In those days, I suffered from chronic eczema, so it was a natural progression to look to the herbs in my garden for a solution. None of the commercial skincare products I had tried helped, and some of them made my skin feel much worse. I started to understand that I needed to treat the underlying causes of the eczema, not just the symptoms, and began to make creams that included herbs and oils for physical healing and essential oils and flower remedies to balance the bio energetic field, and in turn mind, emotions, spirit.

2.    I love the three elements you emphasise on your webpage – natural, organic & holistic, why do you feel these are so important in skin care?

Our bodies are incredibly finely tuned organisms capable of  protecting, healing and renewing themselves in the most extraordinary ways. The chemicals in conventional skincare can interfere not only with the functionality of the skin, but also with other, deeper body systems. Artificial ingredients are often not properly tested and their effects on our health are as yet unknown. Some have been strongly linked to allergies, hormone disruption and cancer. The natural ingredients in Miöja Skincare have been employed safely and effectively for thousands of years; I trust them to heal rather than harm.

We use organic ingredients (and are currently in the process of becoming Certified Organic with Ecocert) not only to ensure the purity of our products, but also because we feel a responsibility towards our world. Our health is inextricably linked to the health of our environment and the choices we make as individuals always have an impact on the wider world. As a small business, our impact is wider still- I want it to be a positive one.

Our products are holistic because they work to heal and balance both the skin and deeper aspects of the self, too. The health and radiance of our skin is dependant on the products we put on it, but also our food choices, how much sleep we get and how we feel emotionally. The vibrational remedies in our products (similar to Bach Flower Remedies or Rescue Remedy) help to bring more of these variables back to a state of balance, for the well being of the whole person.

3.    Mioja has a green range, orange range and a violet range – what are the differences between the ranges?
Each range contains a different handmade vibrational remedy, supported by botanical, organic plant oils and essential oils that work holistically towards the same purpose. The Green Range protects and calms reactivity in the skin while supporting the corresponding qualities of resilience, courage and trust. The Orange Range energizes the skin by stimulating the circulation and helps to inspire creativity, enthusiasm and focus- revitalizing on a mental and emotional level too. The Violet Range detoxifies and brightens the skin while facilitating openness, awareness and integrity, for all over radiance.

Products from different ranges work happily together, which is great, because most of us can benefit from balancing more than one of these aspects of our skin and ourselves at any given time.

4.    What is your favourite ingredient to use and why?
There are so many, but I love Elderflower- it’s heady scent, its creamy blossoms, its brightness, its magic. I love chamomile too- such purity and sweet ingenuousness. Working with herbs over many years, their qualities have come together to form distinct personalities. It’s fascinating.

5.    What advice do you have for those who are switching over to ‘greener’ products?
Do your research! Skin Deep (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/) is a good resource if you want to decipher the ingredients lists on products and find out exactly how green they are. Research brands too, and support those with a green ethos that goes deeper than their marketing campaign. Look at the whole picture- Do their products have recycled/ recyclable packaging? Are the ingredients organic, non GMO and ecologically sound? Do they safeguard your health and the health of the people involved in the manufacturing process? Do they test on animals? It sometimes seems like an effort to unearth the one product in 20 that meets all these criteria, but once you have, the work is done!

6.    Any advice you have for my readers to help them in their journey to become more Glam and Green?

Remember that your efforts are always worth it, no matter how insignificant they may seem sometimes. When we live conscious, more compassionate lives, the effects are far reaching, beyond measure. The more ways we can find to be kinder to ourselves, to each other, to the world, the easier we make it for others to do and be the same.

The three different ranges

I hope you found that interesting and that you are looking forward to learning even more when I post my review?

Im such a fan of this brand - and even more exciting, Mioja is also sponsoring a prize for The Glam Green Girl's Birthday Competition

Thanks for the great information Tasha xXx

SOil Review

A Review on SOil products

As I mentioned in my post Glam and Green Autumn Care - Part 3 - which featured advice from SOil, I said I would be doing a review on two of their products, and I'll also give you some info on the company. The two products I got a chance to review is their Kenyan Shea Butter 100% organic as well as the Treemendus certified organic Tea Tree Bodywash. First a bit about SOil itself...

SOil is a South African company producing certified organic aromatherapy and bodycare products. All of their products are produced in South Africa and they source many ingredients from Africa and support local communities where possible. One of SOil's main and most well-known products is their essential oils - but what I love most about SOil is that their essential oils are not just a brand that they bulk in bulk and repackage. SOil actually farms many of the oils and distills them on their farm in the Zululand!

Talking about essential oils, Chantelle from SOil sent me this bit of information that I think you might find interesting:

What makes Certified Organic Essential Oils the Better Choice for You and the Environment?
When considering this answer, we need to reflect on the environment and the product.
Environment: Growing our plants organically means that no chemicals ie. pesticides or fertilizers are used. It has been proven that using these chemicals kills off micro-organisms in the soil, therefore reducing soil diversity. These chemicals also pollute our groundwater, killing off fish and marine life as well as polluting our drinking water. By not using these chemicals results in nutrient rich, fertile soil, which nourishes the plants and protects water quality, plant life and wildlife. Therefore farming organically leads to a cleaner and more natural environment.
Product: Since it takes a great deal of plant material to create even a small amount of essential oil and due to the way that essential oils are produced, residues of pesticides in concentrated form may appear in the oil if not produced organically. Organic farming ensures that the end product is free of many of these residual toxins and results in a purer and more effective oil. Comforting to know when you consider that 60% of what you put onto your skin is absorbed into your body!

interesting hey?

Before I move onto the products, here is just a bit of information on Treemendus:
Treemendus is South Africa's first and only certified organic range of Tea Tree personal care products - and I'm sure you've gathered from previous posts that I'm a fan of Tea Tree Oil! The oil from the Tea Tree leaf has been proven as most versatile and beneficial because of its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties!

Now, onto the products:

SOil Kenyan Shea Butter

The only ingredient in this little tub - Butyrospermum Parkii aka Shea Butter! 100%organic!
Shea Butter is especially great during the harsh winter months, it is a powerful and natural moisturiser that protects as well as nourishes dry, damaged skin. It is high in both vitamins A and E which helps improve skin conditions such as scarring; eczema; psoriasis; burns; rashes; acne and stretch marks! It's also gentle enough to be used on babies.

Whats great about this product is that a little bit goes a long way. You only need to soften a small amount in your palms to use on your face, body and hair - yes that's right, your hair as well! I like to use it at night on my body and face to let it works its magic while I sleep. I also really enjoy that you can use it as a hair treatment! So great especially now in the dry cold seasons, apply a thin layer on your hair 20 minutes before washing it! Natural hair treatment - Glam and Green ;)

Treemendus Tea Tree Bodywash:

Oh Tea Tree Oil, how I love you! Not only is this bodywash made from Tea Tree leaf extract but also rose geranium and peppermint essential oils! So the Tea Tree cleanses and protects, the rose geranium balances and the peppermint soothes the skin and improves circulation. Lather it all over your body and then take a minute to breathe in the aroma! The ingredients invigorate the senses and its natural!
I like this product especially since it will be my travel buddy for my trips to Zambia - Tea Tree is a natural bug repellent!

Check out SOil's twitter page ( click here ) they have such interesting facts on there - I always learn from their tweets!
And for more info on their products go visit their website www.soil.co.za

Have you tried any of their products? Let me know in a comment or tweet @GlamGreenGirl

Glam and Green Autumn Care - Part 2

Part 2 on how to take care of your skin and body in Autumn

Carrying on from my previous post - Glam and Green Autumn Care - Part 1 - Part 2 will have Sue Rowan from Balm Balm and Indie Lee from Indie Lee Co share what they believe you should know in order to take care of your skin in Autumn
Hope you all enjoy and can relate to the information presented

Sue Rowan from Balm Balm shares her Autumn care tips and recommends products for you to try:

AUTUMN SKIN TIPS

Water can sometimes have a drying effect on your skin, so long, hot showers and baths may dry your skin out even more in the cold winter months.  Use an Oil Spray in the shower while your pores are open and your skin is wet.  This light oil emulsion will keep the healthy natural oils locked in and won’t dry your skin out.  Spray it into a bath as well and swirl around for a soft, non-oily bath.  It will also save you time in the morning by cutting out the need for a body moisturiser.

This spray is light enough for those summer or autumn months when you don’t necessarily need a heavy moisturiser just yet.  You can use it once or twice a day on wet or dry skin.  In the evening, if you feel you need an extra boost of moisture, warm some organic Face Balm into your palms and massage all over - it is deeply moisturising for when your skin needs something a bit heavier)

-         Look for products that contain Jojoba Oil.  It moisturizes dry skin exceptionally well, due to its unique similarity to the skin's natural oil.  It’s often been referred to as ‘nature’s collagen’

-         Try and use natural/organic oils as they are easily absorbed deep into your skin where you need it the most

Thank you so much Sue xXx! The Bath & Body oil is definitely on my list of products to get!

Here's what Indie Lee had to suggest:

  • While the weather is getting cooler you still need to hydrate. We often forget to drink as much water as the winter approaches.

  • Your skin renews itself every 28 days - Don't forget to exfoliate with a natural body scrub once a week in the shower to remove dead cells and keep your skin glowing.

  • Body oils are wonderful to hydrate your skin during winter months. Remember to read your labels though. Petrolatum based oils are occlusive and therefore do not penetrate (or hydrate) your skin. Here's an easy body oil recipe that's great for massages too. You can use your favorite essential oils to change the scent. http://vimeo.com/15528732

  • Thank you Indie xXx

I definitely agree with Indie Lee and Sue Rowan about using oils, I've always been a big fan of using oils to moisturise the body.
I love adding a few drops of esssentail oil to my bath water - lavendar is my favourite for when I want to unwind. Eucaluptus oil is great during the winter months as it is a natural decongestive.

    What are your favourite oils?
