[ECO]: Easy Ways To Go Green in 2016

With 2016  rocking and rolling for everyone already, what's a better time to start being green than now?

While going green is a process, these are a few easy steps you can take on your journey of being more eco-friendly.

Switch your light bulbs to energy saving Compact fluorescent lightbulbs - they use about one 1/3 of electricity and last 10 times longer.

♥ Switch off wall sockets when not in use as they draw a lot of "phantom/vampire" energy while not in use.

♥ Stepping away from your computer for more than 20 minutes? Switch it to "sleep mode" and make sure to power off at the end of the day.

♥ Switch off the tap while brushing your teeth and make sure to have leaking taps fixed.

♥ Plant a tree

♥Start your own vegetable garden

♥  Print on both sides of paper and try go as electronic as possible in terms of documents etc

♥ When buying new beauty products, do your research to find out whether they are cruelty-free or not

♥ Buy local foods, this provides jobs for your community and saves on transport costs.

♥ RECYCLE - REUSE - REDUCE

[ECO]: Reuse Coffee Grounds

Reusing Your Coffee Grounds

I love a good cup of Joe as much as the next person, but have you ever thought about what you can do with the leftover coffee grounds after your demolished your morning wake-up pot?

Here is what you can do with with your coffee grounds:

♥ Add them to your compost pile (also helps get rid of the smell of the compost)
♥ Scatter the coffee grounds around plants that are being attacked by snails and slugs
♥ Deodorize your bins by adding some to an old pantyhose and tying it around the lid.
♥ Get rid of odors in our fridge by adding some to a bowl and leaving it in your fridge for a few weeks
♥ Fertilize your soil or put some in a spray bottle with water when gardening
♥ Add a small amount to chocolate baked goods to add extra flavour
♥ Scrub your pots and pans gently with some coffee grounds and a sponge
♥ Create a scrub for your body (Great for treating those cellulite areas)

[ECO]: Paper Recycling

Why Should We Recycle Paper?

Image: Unsplash

Those that have been reading my blog for a while now, know that I have an obsession when it comes to recycling. I can become quite hectic over it but I feel in terms of the environment, it's a good obsession to have. Over the next few weeks I'll be chatting more about recycling but today's post features a few facts on paper recycling.

While paper is pretty much a necessity in our everyday lives, we're luckily switching over to the electronic side of things but we still use so much paper everyday, and while it may be essential, the trees that are being cut down for it are far more essential.

Did you know that recycling one tonne of paper can save the following?
17 Trees
3.3 cubic yards of landfill space
9 barrels of oil
4000 kilowatts of energy
7000 gallons of water

So how can you play your part?

1) Change to electronic billing - this saves all those bills being thrown in the bin.

2) Need to print something out? Try use both sides of the page.

3) Keep a paper recycling bin right next to the photocopier and fax machine at the office, you'll be surprised how quickly it will fill up.

4) Subscribe to your favourite magazine or newspaper digitally.

5) Buy recycled paper. Using old paper to make new paper uses a lot less energy.

6) Visit Treevolution to find out where you can take your paper recycling to or if it can be collected from your house.

Need any help with recycling? Drop me a message - I'd love to help, like I've said, it's a passion!

[DIY]: Gift Bags

Reusing Magazines To Make Gift Bags

Love to collect magazines like me but sometimes the pile just gets too big? Always attending parties? I have a solution for you - the DIY gift bags!

I made two different bags and I've photographed each step, it's super easy!

What you need:
- A magazine
- scissors (I used cute craft scissors)
- sticky tape or washi tape
-string (if you want to make a bag with handles)
- punch (if you want to make a bag with handles)

You'll need two pages per bag, so I tried to tear out pages with similar colours to sort of keep a theme going.

FIRST BAG:

After you've torn out your pages, cut the edges neatly and cut the one page smaller than the other.

Tape 3 of the sides, leave one side open for the handles.

Punch holes in the side you left open and tie it with string to make handles.

You're first bag is now done!

SECOND BAG:

The same as with the first bag, neatly cut off the edges and cut one page smaller than the other.

This time I used pretty washi tape to tape my edges.

You can seal your package once you're ready to give it to someone with a sweet sticker.

Ta-da! Super easy way to re-use magazines and help save you money!

[REVIEW]: Milk & Honey Bath Soak

Earth Sap - Milk & Honey Bath Soak

Nothing beats a relaxing bath after a long day right? I always add a little oil or a few scoops of bath salts to add to the indulgence of relaxing in a hot bath tub. This bath soak from Earth Sap is the latest next to my bath.

With a milk and honey scent that smells so good, these sea salts help provide your skin with nourishment and the added milk and honey serve as a natural source of vitamins. Plus, this soak is utterly relaxing.

Made from a handful of simple ingredients such as sea salt; milk; honey; peppermint; lemon; orange; lavender; Epsom salts and eucalyptus oil, a few scoops of this indulgent bath soak will add bliss to your bath time.

Its a big tub (450ml) and it is recyclable, plus you can definitely find ways to reuse this tub afterwards I'm sure. Along with smelling great, it also leaves your skin feeling great. Sometimes after using a bath soak, my skin feels so dry afterwards so luckily this wasn't the case after using these bath salts.

STYLE: Pocahontas in The Vineyards

Outfit Post

When my friends and I spent the weekend in Cape Town, one of our must-do's was a visit to a wine farm. Since we were staying in Sea Point and we're getting around via taxi, we decided to skip Stellenbosch and went to visit Groot Constantia in Constantia.

It was so beautiful there and we had such a lovely afternoon! I knew that I wanted to dress in a bohemian style so I borrowed this dress from my bestie - we call it the 'Pocahontas' dress and my high plait was inspired by the ladies from the band Crystal Fighter when they came to visit SA in October. Eco Fashion is about re-using what you already have!

Recycle: Wine Bottles

How to Recycle and Upcycle Wine Bottles

When it comes to wine, I do enjoy a glass of Chenin Blanc or Chardonnay and since I live in South Africa, we have so many fantastic locally produced wines. But what do I do with the bottle afterwards? I usually throw it away in my glass recycling bin but here's another cool idea - make upcycled drinking glasses!

Hands up if you love wine!

Reusing Glass

Ideas on How to Reuse Glass

I found these cute ideas of how to reuse glass on Pinterest and wanted to share them with you. Glass is amazing because it is 100% recyclable but it can also be reused in so many different ways. Put your creative thinking cap on before you throw away that wine bottle, and by throw away, I obviously mean in the recycling bin.

I'm thinking of doing a post where I show you how I've reused items in my house - what do you think, would you be interested in that?
