STYLE: SA Style Awards

Outfit Post

Hi friends!

At the end of November I was honoured to have attended the SA Style Awards at the ultra fab Southern Sun in Hyde Park, Johannesburg. It was evening that oozed fabulosity and style. I wore this beautiful black dress that I found in a boutique in Pretoria called Kekoon where all their dresses are designed and made by the Kekoon designer. I love to support South African brands and being eco-friendly means supporting your local fashion designers.

I love the fit of this dress, it's elegant and classy while adding a touch of sexiness with the one shoulder look. I added some gold metallic tattoos that I ordered from Shine-Ink and black and gold jewellery. My make up was done by the super talented Sasha Martin from Porcelain Rogue (who is also a Chanel make up artist) - I loved the matt gold smokey eye!

STYLE: Pocahontas in The Vineyards

Outfit Post

When my friends and I spent the weekend in Cape Town, one of our must-do's was a visit to a wine farm. Since we were staying in Sea Point and we're getting around via taxi, we decided to skip Stellenbosch and went to visit Groot Constantia in Constantia.

It was so beautiful there and we had such a lovely afternoon! I knew that I wanted to dress in a bohemian style so I borrowed this dress from my bestie - we call it the 'Pocahontas' dress and my high plait was inspired by the ladies from the band Crystal Fighter when they came to visit SA in October. Eco Fashion is about re-using what you already have!

STYLE: Black Glamour

Outfit Post

Hi beautiful friends!

On Saturday I attended a close family friend's 21st birthday party - the theme was Red Carpet and guests had to dress in black & white. Usually for special events I buy a new outfit but part of green fashion is about using what you already own. I'm also currently saving my money so either way I wasn't buying a new outfit. This black lace dress that I wore was one that I had made last year for a wedding (all guests were asked to wear black for that occasion) - having a fabulous black dress in your wardrobe is always a good idea because it will always be a classical look that can be worn to any event.

To change up the look of the dress a bit, I went searching in my mom's closest and found a super cute little lace jacket that I added over (my dress is strapless) - it actually ended up looking like it was made for my dress as straps!

I love lace, it's so beautiful and adds such a gorgeous touch to any look!
Next time you have a special event, shop around in your mom's; sister's or friends closets and who knows, you may be able to come up with a whole outfit!

The Lust List: July 2014

What I'm Currently Lusting Over

Hi everyone!

So I'm not sure if it's just me but I feel like my bank balance has hit a mid year slump - tough cookies it seems for me and my shopping addiction! While I've banned myself from shopping at the moment (except for birthdays etc) I can still ooooh and aaaah over these gorgeous items!

This is what I'm currently lusting over at the moment (you'll see it's quite summer based as I'm counting down till it's spring):

1. Davines Sea Salt Spray - I learnt about this spray at a Carlton hair event the other day and all I can say is "Mermaid hair? Yes Please". It's made using natural sea salt, is paraben, has no added colourings and is a zero impact product. This product retails for R245.00

2. 1Face Watch - I love that these watches are all about fashion with a cause. There are so many to choose from that each signify a different cause. How do you choose? I love each and every cause these watches support but the black one keeps catching my eye (it supports the Pink Drive, a cancer support system). These watches retail for R550.00 and for this black one, it will provide support for 8 cancer patients.

3. Maaji Bikini - From the moment I saw these bikinis on Instagram, I fell in love! This love grew when I found out that this Colombian brand plants a tree for every bikini bought. I adore the gorgeous crop top look! The only thing is the hefty price tag - you're looking at at least R1300.00 for a bikini (price worked out from international catalogues).

4. GHD Hair Iron - Show me something that resembles Peacock colours and I'm in! How stunning is this Lagoon GHD Hair Styler? This Birds Of Paradise Collection has my heart fluttering! It's price: R2380.00

5. Ray-Ban Mirror Aviators - I have been lusting over these since January this year and thought I would get over them but alas my heart still yearns for these beauties! How great would they be for summer? These babies got for about R2200.00

6. Bikini Love  USA Fringe Bikini -  those that follow my holiday adventures on instagram will have noticed that a) I love my USA bikini that I have and b) I'm a little bit obsessed with fringe bikinis (I have 3 at the moment and you best believe that collection will grow soon). So imagine my utter delight when I saw this American Flag Fringe Bikini! Yay! This gorgeous little number retails for R395.00 ps: if I could also have that killer body I would be happy too!

7. Black Cherry Handbags  Neon Cut Out - how fabulous is this bag? Great to add to an outfit as a statement piece plus it's locally made! I think there's only about one left as this was from a summer collection and it retailed for about R395.00 *estimated price*

8. Davines Shimmery Mist - Yes I know, another Davies products? But come on girls, who doesn't want hair that shimmers (in a good way, not a show girl way haha). This bottle of shine costs R235.00

Now you know what I'll be putting my pennies in the piggy bank for! Gorge right? Are you lusting over any of these items?

Love Always, The Glam Green Girl xXx

GUEST POST: Spring Eco-Fashion

Eco-friendly spring/summer look

Getting an eco-friendly look is easier than you may have thought! Some say that being ethical is too expensive to be worth the trouble, but here’s the proof that you don’t need a lot of money to get the peace of mind of dressing up nicely, while not harming the environment:

Earrings - Minted Strawberry | Bag - Sea Bags | Dress - Amour Vert | Watch - Sprout | Sandals - Krista

Let’s break this look down into pieces. First of all, it’s colorful and fun, just what you need for spring-summer. It’s also comfortable, chic and eco-friendly! The dress is made from sustainable peace silk, and it features a cute paisley print and simple, straight shape. It’s a great piece to start an outfit with! The sandals are made of vegan leather, and they feature bright colors and animal prints that are so in right now. You’re going to love wearing them time and time again! The star bag we picked is nautical in style, and it’s made of recycled materials - but that doesn’t make it any less gorgeous! Those cute earrings? Made of paper! And you can easily DIY a pair at home, using a stencil and some old pieces of paper. Finally, cork makes an appearance in the form of a cool watch, which also features organic cotton, corn resin and conflict-free diamonds. What do you say, easy enough for you?

Red Carpet Green Dress - Oscars 2013

Eco - Fashion at the 2013 Academy Awards

Last year, I blogged about the Red Carpet Green Dress campaign - read about it here - and how they were bringing sustainable fashion to the red carpet.

This year, Michael Badger, won the competition and created the gorgeous gown for the "Skyfall" actress, Naomie Harris.

Badger, born in Ghana, was mentored by the Legendary designer Dame Vivienne Westwood, through the creation of his design in her London-based studio.

The gown that Badger created was made from a certified organic silk crepe de chine. It was embroided with vintage glass beads from the 1920's to the 1960's as well as, wait for it, chocolate candy wrappers! Talk about re-using ;) The zippers that were used, were standard reclaimed zippers. "The dying process employed golden rod and a renewable biodegradable natural plant source, a humble camomile, which is also used medicinally and for camomile tea. Since there were no water pollutants or chemicals used, any waste produced was transferred to a compost heap." - source

Badger, "drew inspiration from one of nature’s most powerful forces, a volcano. By focusing on the appearance of lava as it flows, Badger’s design celebrates our world’s natural splendor and serves to remind each of us of our role as its caretaker" - source

Tommy Crawford, Creative Director for Greenpeace International’s Global Detox Campaign said that “The gown created for this year’s Red Carpet Green Dress contest proves that even the most intricate design, subject to the highest levels of scrutiny, can be as sustainable as it is beautiful”.

For more information on Michael Badger, Naomie Harris' dress and Red Carpet Green Dress - check out their website here

What are your thoughts on the dress? I love it! I think part of the reason I love it so much is because I know it is eco-friendly  - very Glam and Green ;

Red Carpet Green Dress - Oscars 2012

Eco Fashion at the 2012 Academy Awards

If you're anything like me, award season is a chance  to 'oooo', 'aaaaah' and 'what was she thinking?' over the gorgeous gowns that hit the red carpet. The 84th Academy Awards this week is exactly one of those times.

Wouldn't it be great, knowing that some of those glamorous gowns, were also green?
Through the wonderful world of twitter I recently was followed by an amazing company called Red Carpet Green Dress . I just love everything about them, I wish I had known earlier about them as I would have enjoyed the challenge of entering (creativity is always good for one's soul).

So, let me tell you a bit more about Red Carpet Green Dress..

Red Carpet Green Dress was launched in 2009 by the wife of director James Cameron, Suzy Amis Cameron. Its an annual competition where designers are challenged to create a red carpet dress made from sustainable material.

Both Suzy & James have both been dedicated to protecting the planet and its resources, and Red Carpet Green Dress was just another way to show their environmental efforts.

In 2010, Jillian Granz won the competition. Jillian created a beautiful gown made out of peace silk. 'Peace silk' you ask? Peace silk is made by allowing silk worms to complete their life cycle, instead of traditional silk where the worms are boiled for their silk. Jillian also had a no-waste policy. every bit of material was used in the garment.

In 2011, the winner of the Red carpet Green Dress competition was Samata Angel. To read about her story from her blog where she explains her whole process, click here

Samata's design 2011

This year, the actress Missi Pyle who starred in the movie 'The Artist' (which, by the way, won best picture as well as best actor) wore a design by the 2012 winner,  Valentina Delfino. This Venezulan born, miami-based designer created the eco-friendly gown by using peace silk; recycled polyester, recycled zippers, and natural mineral die. Each pleat in the dress, was hand sewn as to not use a machine.

Isn't it wonderful knowing that such a beautiful gown that is eco-friendly while still stunning could be made?
I hope to see more and more of these Glam and Green dresses on the red carpet soon!

Let me know what you think of these green dresses, I would love to hear from you!
