[ECO]: Greening Your Office

Eco Tips for The Workplace

Being green in your home is one thing, but carrying it through to your workplace is fantastic! How does one go about greening your office? Well here are a few tips I've put together for you:

1) At the offices I currently work at, we've implemented a recycling system so we all sort our trash into paper; plastic; tin and glass and this gets picked up once a week. Try google companies that will come pick up your recycling for you, or where you can drop it off.

2) Need to print out documents? We use scrap paper (paper that's already been printed on the one side). Better yet though, try go as digital as possible.

3) Unfortunately, some documents still need to be printed out in this digital day and age, so try make sure the paper you're buying is recycled paper.

4) Keep files on computer (make sure to back it up though) instead of file cabinets.

5) When using the copier/printer, use it on draft mode or 'eco' mode as some new copiers have. You'll save on ink and try print on both sides.

6) Power down. Unplug your chargers when they are not being used, switch off unnecessary lights and when leaving work make sure your computer has shut down and is not just on 'sleep mode'.

7) Use compact fluorescent bulbs. This uses less electricity. Also try and use as much natural light as possible. This can even be achieved by having light coloured decor which helps reflect light.

8) Find out who stays in your area and carpool to work - your petrol tank will be much happier!

9) Green you office with small indigenous plants, helps emit oxygen into the air and gives the office a friendlier appeal.

10) Inquire about using green cleaning products in the bathrooms and kitchens.

Hope these tips have helped? Let me know if you have any great eco tips for the office?

[REVIEW]: Comfort Zone Scrub

Body Strategist Scrub from Comfort Zone

I was first introduced to Comfort Zone through Davines, this is because it falls part of the Davines brand. Through my reviews of Davines, you will have read how I respect the company for their sustainability efforts and their amazing hair care products. Naturally I was enticed to try some of their skin care products.

Comfort Zone products are developed and produced in Parma, Italy and the wonderful thing is that the facility uses 100% of it's energy from renewable sources! They also off set their carbon footprints through reforestation projects - such a fan of companies like this!

The Body Strategist Scrub is a renewing body scrub that leaves your skin feeling soft and and silky. Made from a mixture of alpha hydroxy acids and fruit extracts, these granules create an exfoliating effect which eliminates dead skin cells.

This scrub can be used on either dry or wet skin and can then be rinsed off in the shower. I've tried both ways and I both work effectively to give you smooth and soft skin.

90% of the ingredients are of natural origin plus this scrub is free of parabens; mineral oils and silicon.

I use a body scrub weekly, sometime twice a week, I just love how my skin feels afterwards. Becareful not to over exfoliate your skin as you don't want to cause damage to your beautiful skin.

R580 for 200ml - see the Comfort Zone SA Facebook Page for more details

Do you love body scrubs as much as I do?

[ECO]: Paper Recycling

Why Should We Recycle Paper?

Image: Unsplash

Those that have been reading my blog for a while now, know that I have an obsession when it comes to recycling. I can become quite hectic over it but I feel in terms of the environment, it's a good obsession to have. Over the next few weeks I'll be chatting more about recycling but today's post features a few facts on paper recycling.

While paper is pretty much a necessity in our everyday lives, we're luckily switching over to the electronic side of things but we still use so much paper everyday, and while it may be essential, the trees that are being cut down for it are far more essential.

Did you know that recycling one tonne of paper can save the following?
17 Trees
3.3 cubic yards of landfill space
9 barrels of oil
4000 kilowatts of energy
7000 gallons of water

So how can you play your part?

1) Change to electronic billing - this saves all those bills being thrown in the bin.

2) Need to print something out? Try use both sides of the page.

3) Keep a paper recycling bin right next to the photocopier and fax machine at the office, you'll be surprised how quickly it will fill up.

4) Subscribe to your favourite magazine or newspaper digitally.

5) Buy recycled paper. Using old paper to make new paper uses a lot less energy.

6) Visit Treevolution to find out where you can take your paper recycling to or if it can be collected from your house.

Need any help with recycling? Drop me a message - I'd love to help, like I've said, it's a passion!

[REVIEW]: Davines Essential Haircare - MINU

The Minu Family from Davines' New Essential Haircare Line

Before I tell you more about this hair care range from Davines, I have to tell you about what makes me love this brand even more! The Slow Food project!

What is that? Well, Davines have partnered up with the non-profit Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity by joining the Presidia Project. Basically they are helping to protect the Earth's biodiversity by helping certain areas to continue to grow plants that are indigenous to that area and help prevent the disappearance of a genetic heritage. Their goal is to relaunch the economy of these areas and prevent the extinction of local artisan traditions.

Each family in the Essential Haircare line contains one specific active ingredient from a Slow Food Presidium. The MINU range contains an extract of Salina Caper which is grown by Mr Salvatore DÁmico on his farm in Messina (Salina Island).

These capers help protect colour and have quercitin which is a powerful amino acid that helps to protect the structure of the hair.

Now to chat about the MINU range. Firstly, may of you will have realised that a products scent is important to me, these products have a sweet, citrus scent thanks to the orange blossom notes which I do enjoy as it's not too overpowering. Secondly, using these products differs if you have fine or course hair (I'll explain both). The MINU range is all about illuminating and protected cosmetically coloured hair.

Fine Hair:
Use the shampoo, rinse it out and repeat (I do this with all shampoos as it helps remove product build up from your hair). Secondly you can use the conditioner if you want, leave it on for 10 minutes, rinse it out. Then apply the serum. You can skip the conditioner step if you want to and just spray the serum on towel-dried hair. Don't rinse it off.

Course hair:

Shampoo twice (the same as fine hair). Apply the Mask and leave it on for 10 minutes, rinse off and then apply the serum. Don't rinse it off.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed all the products in the range, they are amazing and really leave your hair feeling stronger and healthier. I have a lot of hair, but it's fine so I did feel the Mask was a bit too heavy for my hair but it's great to use every few weeks to give your hair a boost. Plus if you pop in at Carlton, you can have the conditioner or mask applied and then add the Micro Mist treatment - its so divine!

 Shampoo - R230 for 250ml
 Conditioner - R225 for 250ml
 Mask - R345 for 250ml
Serum - R 290 for 150ml.

You can find out more on the Davines website or their facebook page.

What are your favourite Davines products?

[REVIEW] New Hair & The Lastest Hair Trends

Rose Gold Hues & The 2015 Hair Trends

Last week I had my hair done by the uber talented David Gillson at Carlton in Melrose Arch. I had been playing around with the idea of changing my hair colour up a bit and had been so inspired to add some rose gold to it. Since we are transitioning into winter at the moment, there was no better time to do it.

I love having my hair done by David as he uses Davines products and from my previous posts you will know that I love Davines because not only are they fantastic hair care products but the brand is very environmentally conscious!

David used a light wash through my hair and I love how my previous highlights shine through, adding dimension to the colour. I highly recommend the micro mist treatment from Carlton - ah mah zing!

Want to know what the latest hair trends are for the next few months? Rose Gold, duh ;) plus here is a run down of a few more:

True Nature - embrace your natural hair, ditch the weaves and extensions, chemicals and rock your natural hair!

Baby Lights - it's a backlash against the ombre trend and is so much easier to manage compared to normal highlights. It's all about fine wisps of hair.

Matt Brights - adventure with colour; pixelated hair colours; bright colours

Bleached Blondes - Inspired by the one and only Kim Kardashian, embrace the 90's bleached look

Grey - the young are now aiming to look grey!

Which hair trend are you going to try?

Don't forget to call Carlton to book an appointment with David, you won't be sorry!

REVIEW: Angel by Thierry Mugler

Beware of Angels

Hi beauties!

Angel by Thierry Mugler - a fragrance that I have a love/hate relationship with. I never used to be a fan of it until I started working in the Beauty department at The Oprah Magazine where my appreciation for fragrances was elevated but sometimes I still wonder if I really like it. I have been wearing it a bit lately and it seems to be on my 'yes' list but I can't handle spraying too much on.

This fragrance contains notes of bergamot; tropical fruits; vanilla; caramel and patchouli. It's designed to let out the half-angel/half-devil inside of you and to embrace being a woman. I adore the design of the bottle, the diamond like star is just so beautiful to look at.
Did you know that Angel was the first star shaped fragrance?

Being The Glam Green Girl you're probably wondering why I'm reviewing this on my site. I once mentioned on a guest interview that even though I know fragrances aren't exactly eco beauty - I am obsessed with perfumes! So here's the good news about Angel, there is a refillable bottle where you can go to a Thierry Mugler Angel source and refill your bottle instead of buying a new one - ecological and economical!

You can check out a few pics from when I attended the Beware Of Angels event here.

Are you a fan of this fragrance?

REVIEW: Karen Murrell Lipstick

Peony Petal by Karen Murrell

Hi beauties!

I can't tell you how long I have been lusting over a Karen Murrell Lipstick! My desire of owning one of these lipsticks grew after reading some of my favourite international green beauty bloggers rave about them on posts like this one from Hello Dollface and this one from Genuine Glow

Before I share some more photos of this gorgeous lipstick, let me tell you more about why they are such fabulous green beauty lipsticks. Karen Murrell lipsticks don't contain any mineral oils; animal-based materials; parabens or preservatives. They are made from natural based ingredients. Even their packaging is eco-friendly, the canisters dissolve in 100 days and return to Mother Earth and the outer packaging is 100% recyclable!

I love this Peony Petal shade - it's a beautiful peach colour, with a hint of coral as well as a nude. It's a gorgeous colour that can be worn all year round but I think this shade is perfect for spring and summer. With ingredients such as Shea Butter; Sweet Orange Oil; Evening Primrose Oil; Jojoba Seed Oil; Avocardo Oil and Beeswax, this lipstick is both hydrating and nourishing. Active ingredients such as Evening Primrose Oil; Castor Oil and Candelilla make sure of this! It has a scent of cinnamon and citrus and this is from the oils.

As much as I love this lipstick and I really hope to start a collection of them, they are quite pricey and retail for R359 on Faithful To Nature *eeeek*. For more information and to check out the other gorgeous shades, head to the Infinity Skincare Website where there are more stockists listed.

"Nothing nasty touches my lips" - love this!

The Lust List: July 2014

What I'm Currently Lusting Over

Hi everyone!

So I'm not sure if it's just me but I feel like my bank balance has hit a mid year slump - tough cookies it seems for me and my shopping addiction! While I've banned myself from shopping at the moment (except for birthdays etc) I can still ooooh and aaaah over these gorgeous items!

This is what I'm currently lusting over at the moment (you'll see it's quite summer based as I'm counting down till it's spring):

1. Davines Sea Salt Spray - I learnt about this spray at a Carlton hair event the other day and all I can say is "Mermaid hair? Yes Please". It's made using natural sea salt, is paraben, has no added colourings and is a zero impact product. This product retails for R245.00

2. 1Face Watch - I love that these watches are all about fashion with a cause. There are so many to choose from that each signify a different cause. How do you choose? I love each and every cause these watches support but the black one keeps catching my eye (it supports the Pink Drive, a cancer support system). These watches retail for R550.00 and for this black one, it will provide support for 8 cancer patients.

3. Maaji Bikini - From the moment I saw these bikinis on Instagram, I fell in love! This love grew when I found out that this Colombian brand plants a tree for every bikini bought. I adore the gorgeous crop top look! The only thing is the hefty price tag - you're looking at at least R1300.00 for a bikini (price worked out from international catalogues).

4. GHD Hair Iron - Show me something that resembles Peacock colours and I'm in! How stunning is this Lagoon GHD Hair Styler? This Birds Of Paradise Collection has my heart fluttering! It's price: R2380.00

5. Ray-Ban Mirror Aviators - I have been lusting over these since January this year and thought I would get over them but alas my heart still yearns for these beauties! How great would they be for summer? These babies got for about R2200.00

6. Bikini Love  USA Fringe Bikini -  those that follow my holiday adventures on instagram will have noticed that a) I love my USA bikini that I have and b) I'm a little bit obsessed with fringe bikinis (I have 3 at the moment and you best believe that collection will grow soon). So imagine my utter delight when I saw this American Flag Fringe Bikini! Yay! This gorgeous little number retails for R395.00 ps: if I could also have that killer body I would be happy too!

7. Black Cherry Handbags  Neon Cut Out - how fabulous is this bag? Great to add to an outfit as a statement piece plus it's locally made! I think there's only about one left as this was from a summer collection and it retailed for about R395.00 *estimated price*

8. Davines Shimmery Mist - Yes I know, another Davies products? But come on girls, who doesn't want hair that shimmers (in a good way, not a show girl way haha). This bottle of shine costs R235.00

Now you know what I'll be putting my pennies in the piggy bank for! Gorge right? Are you lusting over any of these items?

REVIEW: Hair By David Gillson

Yeah, I Got My Hair Did!

On Thursday the 29th of May, I was spoilt to a colour, cut and treatment by none other than the master of colour, David Gillson himself! David Gillson works at Carlton Hair and I visited him at the Melrose Arch branch where I felt like a princess for the morning!

I arrived a bit early so while waiting for David I was treated to a manicure which I was grateful about as two days later I was attending a wedding. While having my manicure, I explained to David what look I was going for and he immediately knew what colours to use. We all know this blonde isn't natural so David and I decided to bring in a bit more of my natural colour to darken it for winter as well as help with the dreaded regrowth that blondes experience.

David used the new colour technique by Davines called A New Colour. It's an amazing and innovative colouring system that permanently colours your hair while avoiding the use of ammonia! Its a colouring cream that is based on natural substances of vegetable origin such as caretnoids which is a vegetable pigment that has an antioxidant action as well as vegetable melanin which is an antioxidant and anti-free radical. These new colouring creams even contain Vitamin C which help protect your hair structure.

And while I do love being a blonde, we all know how bad bleaching your hair is for you (but I mean come on, I have so much fun being a blonde hehe). The bleaching powder from the Davines A New Colour system is free from ammonia and persulphates and can lighten up to 7 levels - it's pretty much one of the more 'natural' bleaches.

The A New Colour system comes in 43 shades so you're bound to find a colour that suits you!

David used the Flamboyage technique on my hair which blends natural and saturated tones with natural bases. It helps enhance natural tones through the hair which in turn helps with regrowth and leaves hair looking more natural. I was excited about this as regrowth is my absolute worst and sometimes as hard as I try I can't always make it to the hairdresser straight away.

After David applied my colour and I had it washed out, I experienced the Davines Replumping Salon Treatment with a steam treatment called the Micro Mist, this allows for deeper absorbtion of the treatment. The Replumping range from Davines has phtoceuticals which are extracted from plums. These have an antioxidant action which fights free radicals and cellular ageing. It also included hyaluronic acid which helps restore elasticity n the hair strand. You can get the shampoo; conditioner and treatment for at home too!

To read more about why I like the Davines brand so much and what they stand for, click here.

I really am in love with my colour and have received so many compliments! David added a new warm brown tone and I think next time I have my hair done I will add more of this tone while it's still winter!

Check out the Carlton Hair SA Facebook Page for details on how you can book an appointment with David - I promise you won't regret it!

REVIEW: Davines Absolute Beautifying Range

Absolute Beautifying Hair Care Range
Davines

Hi Lovies!

A few weeks ago I was sent this exciting hair care range and I was so looking forward to trying them out as I'm quite a fan of Davines!

Before I share my thoughts on the products, let me first tell you a bit more on why this brand is glam and green. Davines believes that to create beauty, you must encourage people people to not only take care of themselves but of their environment; where they work; where they live. To Davines, sustainability deals with the responsibilty they owe to themselves; their customers; the people they work with and the world in which they operate in, today and tomorrow. Davines has some more great thoughts on sustainability which you can check out on their website here.

Davines are also into renewable energy; zero impact salons; zero impact products and their packiaging choices are based on these three fundamental points:
- The use of as little raw materials as possible;
- The use of recyclable materials;
- The optimization of logistics and quality control processes to avoid waste

Pretty impressive right? Well it gets better! Not only are they focused on sustainable actions but their products are also quite notable.

First up, the Absolute Beautifying Shampoo:

I still haven't made up my mind on whether I like the scent of the shampoo or not... Sometimes the scent reminds me of an island holiday and sometimes it reminds me of a super sweet bubble bath. But enough about that, the shampoo doesn't foam a lot but that's because its sulphate and paraben free (yay!) and seemed to go a good job of cleaning all my hair oil out (I sleep with oil in my hair about once or twice a week as part of my hair care routine).

Absolute Beautifying Conditioner

I really enjoyed using this conditioner because to me if felt more like I was using a hair masque than a conditioner - you even treat as if it were a hair masque by leaving on for a few minutes. The scent of this product isn't as strong as the shampoo which is better for me. I have learnt with this conditioner though that less is more, so try not to apply too much to your hair as it will weigh it down.

Multi Benefit Beauty Treatment

This hair treatment milk is what every girl needs! It's light weight; adds shine; protects against heat; helps detangle hair (you can comb easily through wet or dry hair); fights frizz and add moisture to your hair. It says to use about 10-15 sprays on mid length to ends but I have a lot of hair I find you only need about 10 sprays at most. It's perfect for me as I quickly spray it on my towel dried hair and then I'm good to go with blow drying etc (after I've let my hair dry naturally for a bit).

All three of these products contain Roucou Oil. What is that you may ask? Well I had no idea either haha! But roucou oil come from a plant in the Amazonia called Annatto. It is extremely rich in beta-carotene (it has 100 more times than carrots) and helps restructure your hair and helps it grow - for more about roucou oil click here. Another thing, all three of these products are sulphate and paraben free (as I mentioned about the shampoo).

You can check out the Davines South Africa facebook page for more info on their products.

What Davines products have you tried?

Love always, The Glam Green Girl xXx
